Hawai to Hicks Bay

March 30th -
75 Miles - 382 Miles Total

"New Zealand is a cycling destination that promises unforgettable memories for every rider who ventures here on a two-wheeled quest. If you're looking for an easy cycling destination devoid of hills, headwinds, and inclement weather, you'll have to look elsewhere. Making no bones about it. Aotearoa is no slouch by bike. But fear not, because every uphill has its down, and when the rain clears the vistas that emerge from the curtain of cloud are nothing short of awe-inspiring." - Cycling lonely planet

This blurb from lonely planet is a bit intimating, but it certainly sums up my journey so far...especially today. Today I felt amazing...riding up 600 foot hills..not once, twice, but at least two dozen times. I rode for about 10 hours, cycling about 75 miles... it was nothing short of spectacular. I rode from Hawai across Whitianga Bay, Omaio Bay, Whanarua Bay, Papatea Bay, Whangaparoa Bay, and ended in Horshoe Bay at the town of Hicks Bay. I worked hard to reach each bay as they were separated by a steep hill. While the hills are quite difficult, the descents make it certainly worth it. It comparable to riding a roller coaster, except your bike is the cart, the land are the tracks, and your reward is the descent after working your body to the summit. The weather is incredible here with almost clear skies, bright blue water and temperatures hovering at 70. The quaint towns and lack of traffic have held up its reputation as one of the best rides not only in the southern hemisphere, but the world.

My photos do not bring my experience justice...but I hope you get the picture ;)

  1. Wow, Pete. Biking that much and that intensely is truly a really amazing feat. Not only is it physically demanding, but one's really got to have the mental capacity to bike that much. You are really living up to the ideals of sound mind and sound body.
