April 1st -
57 Miles (484 miles total)
We got an early start this morning because of the forecast of rain and southwesterly winds. Nothing is worse than a head wind when you are cycling with 50+ lbs of gear. The morning went very smoothly as we mostly descended to sea level. We were averaging around 15 mph most of the time! Today, I also had many encounters...that were a testament to just how friendly New Zealenders can be. First, stopped alongside the road I changed a camera battery. The local farmer stopped his truck alongside the road and actually offered me help! We chatted about the North and South Island...what a great guy!
Further down the road, while climbing one of the last climbs I was stopped by a logging truck. He informed me that one of my friends was on the side of the road and might be need in help! Thankfully, my friend was just using the cell phone, but it was great knowing that the truckers are concerned for our safety.
The riding was very relaxing after the major hills, we road along the coast and slowly made our way to Gisbourne.
